Digital Media Lab Policy
The purpose of the GPPL Digital Media Lab is to increase the level of digital literacy in the community and provide access to relevant digital content, equipment, and software to enable community members to create digital projects.
GPPL cardholders can use our equipment and software to convert VHS tapes, Super8 cassettes, Mini-DV tapes, 8 & 16mm film, Super8 film, photographs and slides to assorted digital formats.

The Digital Media Lab is open during normal Library Hours but closes 30 minutes prior to the Library closing. For 3D Printing please make an appointment by phone 313-343-2072 Ext. 2210 with David Lamb.
The GPPL Digital Media Lab is available to Grosse Pointe Library cardholders ages 13 and up with a valid library card from the GPPL System. (Users do not have to have a library card to use the Lab but must have valid school or government issued identification.) Users ages 12 and under may use, but must have an adult accompanying them in the lab at all times.
- Children 12 years old and under - with the supervision of any caregiver.
- Teens 13 - 17 years old and Adults 18 and over may use the lab on their own after completing orientation.
- No food or drink is allowed in the lab.
First-time users must read the Digital Media Lab Policy and sign a form stating they will comply with these rules and agree they will be financially responsible for any misuse or damage to equipment. Users younger than 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign this form.
First-time users are required to attend an orientation session prior to using the Lab. New users that need additional assistance beyond the basic orientation must schedule appointments for the Lab when a designated staff member is available to assist them. Staff will provide up to three training sessions based on availability.
Library staff will direct users to instructions and information on using the equipment and software in the Lab but cannot provide individual assistance.
Reservations: Reserve the Lab for up to 2 hours per day (with extended time permitted if no one else is waiting). Appointments may be made in-person, Appointments will be held for ten minutes.
A maximum of 2 people are allowed in the Lab at one time.
Patrons will hold harmless Grosse Pointe Public Library and their employees and agents from any and all liability for loss of property or damaged materials which may occur through the use of the equipment, the conversion process, and/or the age of the photographic formats.
The public will not be permitted to use the GPPL Digital Media Lab Equipment to create scan, or record material that is prohibited by local, state, or federal law; inappropriate for the library environment; unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others or such use that may violate terms of use of the manufacturer.
Use of copyrighted materials is subject to all applicable laws, including provisions for "fair use." You may not use the lab to make full-length copies of movies, or other copyrighted materials.
The GPPL reserves the right to use the Digital Media Lab for classes and other group activities. During such events, all other users must vacate the lab. All users must save work to removable media at the end of the session.
Digital Media Lab workstations are not available for general computing activities such as word processing, web browsing or email.
