Substitute Circulation Support Staff

On call on an as-needed basis at all 3 locations of the library


$12 an hour. This is a substitute position with no benefits.


  • Checks in, checks out and renews materials according to library procedures
  • Explains registration policies and registers new patrons or renews/updates patron registration records as necessary; inputs information into database
  • Communicates with customers about overdue materials, delinquencies, fees or other circulation problems
  • Processes incoming and outgoing reserves and interlibrary loans
  • Sorts and places items on shelving carts, reserve shelves, in delivery boxes and other locations as appropriate
  • Addresses patron complaints by offering solutions or referring to appropriate supervisor
  • Provides support functions including but not limited to: opening and closing activities of the circulation desk and the branch; unpacking, sorting and processing deliveries, repacking library material and other activities as assigned


  • Ability to meet and interact with the public in a pleasant, enthusiastic manner, with a minimum of six months of customer service experience required.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and use good judgment
  • Ability to sort and file materials alphabetically and numerically
  • Basic familiarity with library operations desirable, with library experience preferred
  • Familiarity with relevant computer equipment and associated software applications, or ability to learn
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment and machines, including copier and cash register
  • Keyboarding skills
  • Ability to do routine and repetitive work and stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift, push and pull 15 pounds or more as designated
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with fellow employees
  • Willingness to work day, evening, Saturday and Sunday work schedules
